Quality homebrew ingredients, portioned for an easy brew day. This Schwarzbier recipe kit comes with every pre-measured ingredient you need to brew Martin's Schwarzbier, a 5-gallon all-grain batch, from grain to glass.

Schwarzbier is Germany's black lager, at home in Thuringia and Saxony, with Bad Koestritz and Kulmbach among its best-known homes. It looks like a stout but drinks like a lager: nearly opaque in the glass, yet light in body and dry on the finish. The dark malts give color and a faint cocoa note without the harsh roast of a porter or stout.

This one runs around five percent, using Carafa and chocolate malt for the near-black color, Munich malt for backbone, and Perle and Hallertau Mittelfrueh for a clean noble balance. Ferment it cold and it comes out crisp, the kind of dark beer you can drink a few of without fatigue.

A Note On Substitutions

  • This kit is built for brew-in-a-bag (BIAB), the simplest way to make all-grain beer at home. The basic brew day looks like this:

    1. Heat your water and steep the milled grain to make wort.
    2. Boil the wort, adding the hops on the schedule in the recipe.
    3. Cool the wort down quickly, then transfer it to your fermenter.
    4. Pitch the yeast and let it ferment for about two weeks.
    5. Bottle or keg, wait for carbonation, then enjoy.

That yields roughly 53 bottles of fresh Schwarzbier. It works great with our digital electric homebrew systems, which hold your temperatures for you, though any kettle and burner will do.

  • This is a recipe kit, so it includes the ingredients only. To brew it at home you will also need:

    • A brew kettle or an electric all-in-one brewing system
    • A grain bag for brew-in-a-bag (or a mash tun for a traditional mash)
    • A fermenter with an airlock
    • A thermometer and a way to chill the wort
    • Sanitizer, and bottles or a keg for packaging
