Everything you need to brew comes in one recipe kit. This Scottish Heavy recipe kit comes with every pre-measured ingredient you need to brew Martin's Scottish Heavy, a 5-gallon all-grain batch, from grain to glass.

Scottish heavy, the 70 shilling ale, sits in the middle of the Scottish range, a step up in gravity from the light but still firmly a session beer. The character is malt-driven and smooth, light caramel and toast with only a whisper of hop bitterness. Fermented cool and clean, it lets that malt take the lead.

The color is amber to light brown, the body medium, the finish gently sweet without being cloying. Around three and a half percent, it suits a long conversation better than a quick pint. A single Fuggle addition keeps the bitterness in check.

A Note On Substitutions

This kit includes Crystal 50 in place of the recipe's Fawcett Crystal Malt I. We stock dry yeast only, so LalBrew Nottingham (English/Neutral) dry yeast stands in for the recipe's Scottish Ale (Wyeast Labs 1728).

  • This kit is built for brew-in-a-bag (BIAB), the simplest way to make all-grain beer at home. The basic brew day looks like this:

    1. Heat your water and steep the milled grain to make wort.
    2. Boil the wort, adding the hops on the schedule in the recipe.
    3. Cool the wort down quickly, then transfer it to your fermenter.
    4. Pitch the yeast and let it ferment for about two weeks.
    5. Bottle or keg, wait for carbonation, then enjoy.

That yields roughly 53 bottles of fresh Scottish Heavy. It works great with our digital electric homebrew systems, which hold your temperatures for you, though any kettle and burner will do.

  • This is a recipe kit, so it includes the ingredients only. To brew it at home you will also need:

    • A brew kettle or an electric all-in-one brewing system
    • A grain bag for brew-in-a-bag (or a mash tun for a traditional mash)
    • A fermenter with an airlock
    • A thermometer and a way to chill the wort
    • Sanitizer, and bottles or a keg for packaging
