This is the fun, easy way to make beer at home. This Scottish Light recipe kit comes with every pre-measured ingredient you need to brew Martin's Scottish Light, a 5-gallon all-grain batch, from grain to glass.

Scottish light, or 60 shilling, is the lightest of the traditional Scottish ales, named for the old practice of taxing beer by the barrel. It is a low-gravity, malt-centered ale fermented cool, which keeps the yeast quiet and lets a soft, faintly caramel maltiness lead. Hops are barely there, in keeping with a cool northern climate that never favored them.

At under three percent this is about as sessionable as beer gets, dark copper in the glass with a clean, dry finish. A touch of roasted barley adds depth without turning it toward stout.

  • This kit is built for brew-in-a-bag (BIAB), the simplest way to make all-grain beer at home. The basic brew day looks like this:

    1. Heat your water and steep the milled grain to make wort.
    2. Boil the wort, adding the hops on the schedule in the recipe.
    3. Cool the wort down quickly, then transfer it to your fermenter.
    4. Pitch the yeast and let it ferment for about two weeks.
    5. Bottle or keg, wait for carbonation, then enjoy.

That yields roughly 53 bottles of fresh Scottish Light. It works great with our digital electric homebrew systems, which hold your temperatures for you, though any kettle and burner will do.

  • This is a recipe kit, so it includes the ingredients only. To brew it at home you will also need:

    • A brew kettle or an electric all-in-one brewing system
    • A grain bag for brew-in-a-bag (or a mash tun for a traditional mash)
    • A fermenter with an airlock
    • A thermometer and a way to chill the wort
    • Sanitizer, and bottles or a keg for packaging
