Brew tasty beer at home with real, fresh ingredients. This Belgian Tripel recipe kit comes with every pre-measured ingredient you need to brew Martin's Syla, a 5-gallon all-grain batch, from grain to glass.

The tripel was made famous by the monks at Westmalle, a strong golden ale that hides its strength behind a dry, drinkable body. Expect pale gold color, a fluffy white head, and spicy yeast phenols alongside pear-like fruit. Table sugar thins the finish so a beer near 8 percent never feels heavy or sweet.

Syla follows that template and adds a touch of black pepper, ground in by the brewer, echoing the peppery note the yeast already throws. High carbonation keeps it bright and lifts the aromatics.

A Note On Substitutions

This kit includes Crystal 50 in place of the recipe's Caramunich® II; Wheat Malt in place of the recipe's Wheat Malt, Pale (Weyermann). We stock dry yeast only, so SafAle BE-256 (Belgian Abbey) dry yeast stands in for the recipe's SafBrew Specialty Ale (DCL/Fermentis T-58). Not included, add your own: 3.00 g Black Pepper.

  • This kit is built for brew-in-a-bag (BIAB), the simplest way to make all-grain beer at home. The basic brew day looks like this:

    1. Heat your water and steep the milled grain to make wort.
    2. Boil the wort, adding the hops on the schedule in the recipe.
    3. Cool the wort down quickly, then transfer it to your fermenter.
    4. Pitch the yeast and let it ferment for about two weeks.
    5. Bottle or keg, wait for carbonation, then enjoy.

That yields roughly 53 bottles of fresh Belgian Tripel. It works great with our digital electric homebrew systems, which hold your temperatures for you, though any kettle and burner will do.

  • This is a recipe kit, so it includes the ingredients only. To brew it at home you will also need:

    • A brew kettle or an electric all-in-one brewing system
    • A grain bag for brew-in-a-bag (or a mash tun for a traditional mash)
    • A fermenter with an airlock
    • A thermometer and a way to chill the wort
    • Sanitizer, and bottles or a keg for packaging
