Brew pub-quality beer at home for a fraction of the price. This Australian Sparkling Ale recipe kit comes with every pre-measured ingredient you need to brew Martin's Victoria Bitter, a 5-gallon all-grain batch, from grain to glass.

Victoria Bitter, or VB, is one of Australia's best-selling beers, a green-labelled fixture of the pub and the esky despite a name that promises more bitterness than it delivers. This is a clone of it: pale, dry, and cleanly bitter, brewed to sit somewhere between a lager and an ale the way the original does.

It pours very pale with firm carbonation and a lean body around 5.5%. The hopping is old-school and earthy rather than citrusy, dry enough to earn the word bitter on the label without ever turning aggressive. A hot-climate lawnmower beer with a cult following at home.

A Note On Substitutions

This kit includes Northern Brewer in place of the recipe's Cluster. We stock dry yeast only, so SafLager W-34/70 (German Lager) dry yeast stands in for the recipe's German Lager (White Labs WLP830).

  • This kit is built for brew-in-a-bag (BIAB), the simplest way to make all-grain beer at home. The basic brew day looks like this:

    1. Heat your water and steep the milled grain to make wort.
    2. Boil the wort, adding the hops on the schedule in the recipe.
    3. Cool the wort down quickly, then transfer it to your fermenter.
    4. Pitch the yeast and let it ferment for about two weeks.
    5. Bottle or keg, wait for carbonation, then enjoy.

That yields roughly 53 bottles of fresh Australian Sparkling Ale. It works great with our digital electric homebrew systems, which hold your temperatures for you, though any kettle and burner will do.

  • This is a recipe kit, so it includes the ingredients only. To brew it at home you will also need:

    • A brew kettle or an electric all-in-one brewing system
    • A grain bag for brew-in-a-bag (or a mash tun for a traditional mash)
    • A fermenter with an airlock
    • A thermometer and a way to chill the wort
    • Sanitizer, and bottles or a keg for packaging
