This is an easy beer recipe for a crowd-pleasing pint. This Vienna Lager recipe kit comes with every pre-measured ingredient you need to brew Martin's Vienna Lager, a 5-gallon all-grain batch, from grain to glass.

Anton Dreher developed this style in Vienna in the 1840s, using a kilning method that gave the toasty amber malt now named for the city. The beer is a reddish-copper lager, moderate in strength, with a soft bready malt center and a dry, clean finish. When Austrian and German brewers emigrated to Mexico later that century, they carried the style with them, which is why its closest living relatives are the amber lagers of that country.

Perle and Tettnang hops keep the bitterness restrained and the balance tilted toward malt. A small amount of chocolate malt deepens the color without adding roast. It is an easy beer to drink and a hard one to brew badly, provided the fermentation runs cold and finishes clean.

  • This kit is built for brew-in-a-bag (BIAB), the simplest way to make all-grain beer at home. The basic brew day looks like this:

    1. Heat your water and steep the milled grain to make wort.
    2. Boil the wort, adding the hops on the schedule in the recipe.
    3. Cool the wort down quickly, then transfer it to your fermenter.
    4. Pitch the yeast and let it ferment for about two weeks.
    5. Bottle or keg, wait for carbonation, then enjoy.

That yields roughly 53 bottles of fresh Vienna Lager. It works great with our digital electric homebrew systems, which hold your temperatures for you, though any kettle and burner will do.

  • This is a recipe kit, so it includes the ingredients only. To brew it at home you will also need:

    • A brew kettle or an electric all-in-one brewing system
    • A grain bag for brew-in-a-bag (or a mash tun for a traditional mash)
    • A fermenter with an airlock
    • A thermometer and a way to chill the wort
    • Sanitizer, and bottles or a keg for packaging
