Fresh beer ingredients, measured out and ready to brew. This Wheatwine recipe kit comes with every pre-measured ingredient you need to brew Martin's Wheatwine, a 5-gallon all-grain batch, from grain to glass.

Wheatwine is an American invention from the 1980s, a barleywine-strength beer built on a large proportion of wheat rather than all barley. Rubicon Brewing in Sacramento usually gets credit for the first, and the style stayed rare after that. The wheat gives it a bready, slightly tangy character and a fuller body, while the strength brings honey, light caramel, and a hint of bread crust. This one folds actual honey into the grist for a drier, more floral finish.

Magnum and Hallertau keep the bitterness in check, with Nectaron adding a fruit note over the top.

A Note On Substitutions

This kit includes 2-Row Pale Malt in place of the recipe's 2-row American Pale Malt (Briess); Crystal 50 in place of the recipe's Caramunich I (Weyermann); Hallertau Mittelfrüh in place of the recipe's Hallertau Blanc; Nectaron in place of the recipe's Nelson Sauvin. We stock dry yeast only, so SafAle US-05 (American Ale) dry yeast stands in for the recipe's American Wheat Ale (Wyeast Labs 1010).

  • This kit is built for brew-in-a-bag (BIAB), the simplest way to make all-grain beer at home. The basic brew day looks like this:

    1. Heat your water and steep the milled grain to make wort.
    2. Boil the wort, adding the hops on the schedule in the recipe.
    3. Cool the wort down quickly, then transfer it to your fermenter.
    4. Pitch the yeast and let it ferment for about two weeks.
    5. Bottle or keg, wait for carbonation, then enjoy.

That yields roughly 53 bottles of fresh Wheatwine. It works great with our digital electric homebrew systems, which hold your temperatures for you, though any kettle and burner will do.

  • This is a recipe kit, so it includes the ingredients only. To brew it at home you will also need:

    • A brew kettle or an electric all-in-one brewing system
    • A grain bag for brew-in-a-bag (or a mash tun for a traditional mash)
    • A fermenter with an airlock
    • A thermometer and a way to chill the wort
    • Sanitizer, and bottles or a keg for packaging
