Why Does Clawhammer No Longer Ship To North Carolina?

Federal and state rules and regulations on distilling can be very difficult to navigate. They're antiquated, confusing, and even contradictory. Clawhammer has been selling stills since early 2009 and we've been carefully navigating the waters of distillation regulation from the very beginning.

Here's a bit of Clawhammer trivia (read carefully, it gets confusing): We originally wanted to headquarter the business in North Carolina. However, the North Carolina ABC informed us (as a response to our inquiry) that operating a business in NC that produces and sells distillation equipment (even if it's just a kit) isn't possible, according to the state's laws. However, individuals CAN buy distillation equipment in North Carolina. Confusing, huh.

So, to clarify, Clawhammer CAN ship still kit to NC from another state, and residents of North Carolina are allowed to purchase distillation equipment (assuming they're using them for legal purposes, they have the proper permits, etc.). However, our business cannot be located in NC due to century old prohibition era laws that prevent businesses from selling distillation equipment in this state. Because of these rules we actually operated the business out of Tennessee from 2009 to 2011.

In late 2011, we moved the entire business to Colorado, which is our current home. We're currently headquartered in Fort Collins, CO. We manufacture all of our equipment and manage all of our operations from here.

However, in 2015 the business owner moved across the country once again and now permanently resides in North Carolina. Because NC prohibits the sale and manufacture of distillation equipment in this state (as mentioned above), none of the manufacturing occurs in NC and we don't ship stills there either. Rules are rules.

With that said, if you live in NC and want to buy products, you're out of luck for the time being. If you are looking for a copper "moonshine still" and you don't live in North Carolina, it's your lucky day. We're fully stocked with 1, 5, and 10 gallon copper "moonshine" still kits and we ship daily.

  • Can you make a still out of stainless steel? this would come in handy for distilling fresh water from sea water. I read recently that you can procure a license to produce alcohol for use in car engines with a permit from some Authorities.
